Fleas

Fleas are persistent but with a proper flea management program, they can be eliminated from your pet and your home!

Fleas can be prevented. There are some excellent flea growth-inhibiting products available at your veterinarian for use on your dog and cat.

Signs of flea infestation:

Look for debris which has the appearance of "salt and pepper" in the area where the pet has been sleeping which is a mixture of flea eggs (white) and dried blood (black). If you're still not sure, brush your pet over a white sheet or towel and watch for "salt and pepper" debris.  You can also leave a white sheet spread over the floor area around where your pet sleeps. Fleas will stand out quite clearly on the sheet.

If you do find even one flea in your home it indicates the presence of an infestation and you will require a professional pest control service. The Great Gray Owl Pest Control Company offers an effective guaranteed flea treatment for the fleas living in your home.

If fleas are found inside the home, the major steps in flea control are (1) thorough sanitation/vacuuming throughout and emptying and disposing of the vacuum bag (2) professional service (3) flea bath and control product applied to the pet(s).

Tips:

  • Thoroughly vacuum all floors and upholstered furniture, especially where pets sleep, to remove both organic debris and as many flea eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults as possible.
  • Wash the pet's bedding in hot water or destroy, if necessary.
  • Groom your pets regularly outdoors to keep fleas, eggs, and larvae from falling off inside the house.
  • When pets go outdoors, minimize their contact with infested animals by keeping them on a leash and in a fenced-in yard.
  • An exterior spray treatment helps in August and September when fleas are at their most active level outside.

Some facts about fleas:

  • More than 2,400 flea species exist worldwide.

  • Fleas can jump up to 150 times the length of their bodies-equivalent to a person jumping 1000 feet

  • Fleas accelerate the equivalent of 50 times faster than a space shuttle does after liftoff.

  • The cat flea is the most common household flea, even on dogs.
